Daily 5 Digital Binder for Remote Learning!

My students have a binder that they use for the Daily 5 every day during the reading block. Inside they keep all of their reading logs, anchor charts from mini-lessons, genre charts, word lists for word work and poems or passages to work on fluency. They have a separate notebook for work on writing activities.
I created a digital version that I believe will serve them well this year! What is amazing about the digital version is that I learned I do not need to have thought of every little thing that needs to be in their notebook right now. I can edit a master copy during the year and it will automatically edit their student copies in Google Classroom.
I KNOW! Another game changer!! I learned this bit of magic from Jessica Wildings You-Tube Channel video How to Make Student Digital Interactive Notebooks Update When You Update Your Master Copy.
So go check that out and I will meet you back here!!
Did you see the drawback video link? Updates only break the link within the same slideshow. Hyperlinks still work. So I made separate files for each tab and link them that way!

Here is the first file that the other files are linked to. If you wish to use these files, you will need to click on the links to make forced copies of each file. I have also included links for products that I have purchased in the past and made digital (see below for how!) as well as a product I made for digital reading logs. All of these links can be found on page 3 of this first file. Click on the picture below to make a forced copy.

This file also has the contents of the first tab- Reading Logs. I created digital reading logs that the students will use throughout the year. I posted the Fiction Pack on TpT and will be creating and posting both Non-Fiction and Author's Craft soon. These logs are designed to extend the mini-lessons on strategies. A few examples are below.

The next tab is for mini-lessons. This will be digital versions of anchor charts that I use to teach strategies throughout the year. Be sure to check back here as I will post some of these as I create them! You can also just take a picture of your anchor chart and add that to the file. The purpose is to give students a resource guide on reading strategies learned in class!

Next, we have Genre. The first page is an overall cheat sheet of different types of genres and their characteristics. This was a freebie from Scholastic about a million years ago- an oldie but a goodie!!
After this, I used Reading Genre Posters by Raise the Bar Reading. I made them interactive by taking screenshots of the poster parts and making them moving pieces. After we review the genre in a mini-lesson, students will put the poster together in their binder. I usually have them choose a book from that genre for Round 1 of Daily 5 (Read to Self, Someone or Listen to Reading) as well.

On to Word Work. We use Fundations by Wilson, but we have created our own word lists based on the spelling patterns covered. I included these for you if you wish to use them. Each list has a moveable list on the side called Spelling to Go. Students can copy this text box and then paste it on the slide they choose to complete for word work so that their list is in front of them. They do not need to toggle back and forth!
I used a Freebie- Digital Spelling Activities from Sailing Into Second for word work options.
This is the only file that has tab links within it. I have set it up so that there will most likely not be any edits made from me to the master file. If I do, I will show students how to link pages during a small group break-out session.

The last file is Fluency. I used 5 Step Fluency passages from Jodie Southard. There are enough for the entire year. Students will complete 1 passage a week. She offers a digital version, but it is not interactive. I made the slides interactive by adding moveable clipart and highlighting strips. When you add moveable clipart, be sure to search for transparent clipart so the background is removed. To make highlight strips, you create a shape, add color, and then under the color tab click custom. You can then adjust the transparency level to make it a highlight strip! Lastly, I added a you-tube video of a 1 minute counter. They complete one task per day for either morning work or before one of the rounds in Daily 5.

That is my Digital Daily 5 Binder! Enjoy!!

There are so many books for the night before school starts- but NONE for second grade! So... I wrote one. It's editable so you can change the grade to whatever you need!

New Product in my TpT store!
Editable book and letter for students for the night before second grade begins!
Here is a book for students to read to help with those jitters the night before the first day of school. There is a letter for the student to sprinkle some magic glitter under their pillow and make a wish for the school year. This magic glitter will help take those jitters away for a good night's sleep! You can use just the book, just the letter or both!!
This product includes a word doc and a link to Google Slides to edit the book if you wish to change the grade or some wording to make it more personal.

There is also a Bonus Lesson!!
Included is both a printed and digital version (link to Google slides) for a follow-up lesson on the first day of school. This lesson goes with the book This School Year Will Be the Best by Kay Winters. Students will write and illustrate their wish for the school year. In the digital version, they add their photo and write their wish.

Wow- just coming back from my down the Bitmoji Virtual Classroom rabbit hole journey! I have transformed the pages I started with, and added so many new ones! Check them out here. Feel free to make a copy of any of the pages to your drive and edit- make them your own! There are a few pages that you will not have access to because I used items from TpT that I purchased- sorry!!

I can hardly take credit for all of the work. It is a compilation of so many different educators on the Bitmoji Craze for Educators Facebook page. There are almost 500,000 members- and everyone shares everything! It is Disneyland for teachers! I highly recommend you bring your self right over there!!

Here is the Daily 5 page. This will be in my Google Classroom under Daily 5 as material so students have access to the resources at all times. They will click on the objects to bring them to websites, or information they need to navigate the Daily 5.

The math page will be listed as material under the Math section. For the first week or so I intend to have the students explore the different links as I test for a baseline on basic facts.

I will be doing the same with Fundations. There is a link to an online Fundations board for students to practice with!

I laugh every time I look at the skeleton! I plan on having the students name him (or her!).

Here we are in one of the wellness rooms. If you click on the Zones of Regulation poster it brings you to our calming corner with lost of options to perk you up or calm you down- based on your zone!

There are also many links to different tutorial videos. I learned how to make an animated banner for my Google Classroom page:

I learned how to make my Bitmoji bust a move too!

One of the many amazing teachers posted a Fist to Five poster to show levels of understanding.

Get a copy here to edit and make your own here. Credits are in the slide you are making a copy of.

There are also some tips for staying healthy and wearing masks

I am currently creating lessons for the first week using Google slides and my Bitmoji rooms. I will give you a tour of my Google Classroom set-up soon!!

Stay Healthy!

Stop the presses- Oh My Good Shoes! Did you know that you can add fonts in Google Slides? Forgive me if this is old news but what a revelation!! I was always so bummed that those were the 'only' options- little did I know!! If you live under the turnip truck as I apparently do, read on to find out how!!
  • To check out what fonts you would like to add, head on over to Google Fonts. There you can browse many, many wonderful fonts. You will need the names of the ones you want to add.
  • Then open up Google Slides, create a text box, and then click on the font option. At the top of the list, it says more fonts. Hmm, In hindsight this should have been a giveaway but I never took the bait-HA!
  • If you click on that option and type in the name of the font you loved from Google Fonts- it appears magically!! Click to add and there you go- new fonts for your slides!

This my friends makes me happy!!
After a very long hiatus (going back to school in your late 40's is no joke y'all) I am back to starting my blog. Welcome to Possibility Perch 2.0! What a time to come back. Do you know how your fall is going to look like? Back to School will be quite different in so many ways. It looks more and more like there will be either full remote, or some time of hybrid version of school reopening here in Massachusetts.  It is my hope that in these upcoming weeks before school starts I can offer some assistance with preparing your digital classroom.
Have you seen these Bitmoji classrooms? I just love them and I know my kiddos will love it as well. Last year we had Bitmoji print outs outside our classroom doors as our welcome signs and they were a hoot. I started to create my layouts for Google Classroom. Here's a peek at a few...

I started with this great resource from Mac Creations. There are SO many to choose from but I really liked this one because it had the Fundations alphabet strip- just like in Room 5! I watched more than a few tutorials on YouTube. Again- there are SO many. I really liked Emily Houck's videos, and Amy Garrison has some good videos too. Did you know there are Facebook pages devoted to this? A colleague hooked me up with one that has a PNG image library- woo hoo. Check out Bitmoji Craze for Educators!
I am now working on adding my links, and schedules. I will be posting on how all those work soon.
It's good to be back!

Room 5 is ready and waiting for the kiddos to start on Tuesday, August 29th. I received a mini-grant from our amazing PTG to purchase these awesome stability ball seats for the students this year. They come in six different colors and just make the class pop!

Happy New Year!
The kiddos started off the year by revisiting their smart goals and making adjustments as needed. We then had some fun making some new year wishes using Amy Lemons' from Stepping Into Second unit New Year's Fun!
